About Kenan

While growing up in Jordan, Kenan noticed a popular, western fast food chain closing down abruptly. Intrigued by the sudden closure, Kenan’s curiosity led him to a newspaper article that cited “trademark infringement” as the reason. The restaurant was operating under the brand name of the fast food chain, without seeking the appropriate license. Upon further research, it appeared that such infringements were widespread in Jordan. This opened Kenan’s eyes to a new area of law: intellectual property. The modern and ever-evolving nature of IP changed Kenan’s perception of law as a career. The incident inspired Kenan to pursue a law degree from the University of Edinburgh, where he graduated with First Class honours in 2023.

During his time at the University of Edinburgh, Kenan took two honours courses focused on IP, achieving a First in both. Coupled with his passion for music, his interest in IP led him to write a dissertation titled “Music Sampling and Copyright: Can the United Kingdom Find an Original Solution?”. Despite the topic of his dissertation focusing on copyright, Kenan was always fascinated with the nuance behind trademarks.

Kenan’s understanding of the importance of IP protection, alongside his attention to detail skills, convinced him that a career as a trademark attorney is the perfect fit for him. He joined HLK’s Leeds office in 2023 as a Trainee Trademark Attorney.
