UK and European Patent Attorney
Greg is a Partner and Patent Attorney at HLK. He is recognised by both clients and colleagues as an expert in the fields of electronics and telecommunications. With experience both in private practice and as part of an in-house IP department, during a year-long secondment, Greg has a strong understanding of clients’ needs and regularly gives strategic advice on patent prosecution, portfolio management and litigation. In particular, Greg brings a deep level of technical background knowledge to his work in the drafting and prosecution of high-value, standards essential patents (SEPs); his advice and opinions are highly regarded by those working in the field.
Greg is dual qualified as a Chartered UK (2015) and European (2014) Patent Attorney. Greg is also a Patent Attorney Litigator (2020), certified to conduct intellectual property litigation in all relevant UK courts. He joined HLK in 2013 from another highly regarded private practice firm, and became a Partner in 2022.
He is experienced in the drafting and prosecution of patent applications, including frequently representing clients in Oral Proceedings at the European Patent Office. His prosecution practice spans a diverse range of technologies, including telecommunication technologies, semiconductor and microelectromechanical devices, industrial machining, and automotive technologies. His breadth of knowledge is particularly useful in the prosecution of applications which span several fields of technology, for example, inventions which include electrical and engineering elements. Greg is also experienced in drafting and prosecuting applications in the emerging field of machine learning.
Greg has been awarded a Higher Courts Litigation Certificate, giving him the right to conduct litigation in all relevant courts, rights of audience in the Intellectual Property Enterprise Court (IPEC) and County Court and the right to conduct appeals from the IPEC and County Court. His knowledge of patent prosecution and litigation enables him to provide practical advice on both obtaining and enforcing patent rights.
During his secondment, Greg was part of a team overseeing the patent portfolio of a large multinational corporation specialising in the manufacture of imaging and optical products. In this role, he was involved in advising on litigation strategy and training in-house attorneys, in addition to general patent prosecution. Greg has continued his involvement in litigation proceedings, and is frequently called upon to provide freedom to operate, validity and infringement advice.
Greg obtained a First Class Honours degree in Physics from the University of Sheffield. His PhD is in the field of particle physics, specifically neutrino oscillation, and involved particle behaviour modelling, circuit design and construction techniques, optics, laser and LED technologies.
In his spare time, Greg is a keen cyclist and rock climber, and can often be found in the hillier parts of the UK and Europe.
