About Emily

Emily joined HLK in 2022, having started her patent career in 2021 at a small firm in the South-West. She has a particular interest in renewable energy generation, sustainable materials, and the application of science to real life scenarios.

Emily completed a PhD in Chemistry at the University of Bath. During her PhD, she researched the growth and properties of semiconducting materials for thermoelectric and photovoltaic applications.

Before her PhD, Emily completed two Master’s degrees, one in Sustainable Chemical Technologies and one in Chemistry. This has provided her with a breadth of scientific experience covering a broad range of scientific areas, including: electrochemistry; epidemiology; biosensors; materials science; inorganic synthesis; physics; and chemical engineering. Her interdisciplinary studies have also provided her with an understanding of the relationship between the different scientific disciplines. During her Sustainable Chemical Technologies Master’s year, she was awarded the Whorrod Prize for outstanding academic excellence.

During her PhD, Emily shared her passion for science by mentoring, supervising, and designing research projects for undergraduate students, and attended secondary schools to give workshops and talks to encourage students to study STEM subjects.

Alongside her academic studies, Emily undertook a year industrial placement at Merck Chemicals Ltd focussing on the development of organic photodiodes. This is where she first experienced the role of IP in research and development. This allowed her to appreciate the processes behind the innovation of new products and sparked her interest in a career in IP.

Since joining the Chemistry and Life Sciences Team at HLK, Emily has gained experience drafting and prosecuting various patent applications across a wide range of subject matter, including composite materials, pharmaceutical compositions, and functionalised fabrics.
